Athenai Institute National Campaign Working to Close Remaining Confucius Institutes by Year End

[Williamsburg, VA] [April 23, 2021] – The Athenai Institute, a student led organization dedicated to removing the influence of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from US colleges and universities applauded the leadership of The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA for announcing the closure of the Confucius Institute there on June 30, 2021. Athenai leadership and students throughout the country are energized by this announcement and working to duplicate its success elsewhere to force the closure of the remaining 50 Confucius Institute’s in the United States by the end of 2021.

“It is no secret that millions are silenced, threatened, and directly harmed by the CCP.  Its apologists and enablers have no place in our society, much less on our campuses,” explained Caleb Max, Chairman of the Athenai Institute. “The continued presence of Confucius Institutes on any campus is troubling and these incubators of propaganda must be removed.”

Since the Athenai Institute released its Washington Appeal in May 2020, 33 colleges and universities have closed their Confucius Institutes. Nearly a dozen more announced plans to close too.

“The William & Mary announcement shows that Athenai’s model of bipartisan student activism aimed at removing the influence of the Chinese Communist Party from our universities, one campus at a time is working,” explained John Metz, the Athenai Institute’s Executive Director. “While we have accomplished significant progress, there is still much more work to do. We have the students, energy, and momentum to make a difference – but more importantly we have the truth on our side.”

Beginning in this month, student leaders from Athenai will be implementing a suite of targeted actions — including on-campus demonstrations, student government resolutions, op-eds, legislative advocacy, and petition drives — to pressure universities to close remaining Confucius Institutes. Athenai’s efforts will prioritize public universities, beginning with ten target universities. These efforts will be supported by Athenai’s newly-launched 501(c)(4) affiliate, Stand Against Chinese Communism (SACC).

The Athenai Institute is a nonpartisan, student-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to removing the influence of the Chinese Communist Party from US colleges and universities. The movement reflects a growing bipartisan consensus that the CCP has no place on college campuses. Fighting back against the CCP’s efforts to influence our institutions is vital to maintaining freedoms and fighting back against this genocidal regime.
